Indian Cricket - A Monumental Disaster
- Collin Remegius Noronha

Could things get any worse for indian cricket?! Take a moment to think about what the indian cricket scene has had to deal with in the recent past. The irony is that this game gets some much attention in India that most people sadly don't know that the Índian National Game is actually Hockey..! Now if our cricket team was actually winning most of the matches they played, thats alright. But our team seems to have the uncanny ability of stealing defeat from the hands of the opponent, and it looks like they are getting good at it. So who is to blame? Why should the coach be blamed? His job is not to teach the players to play the game. The coach can't really spank a player on the field if he doesn't perform. He spends enough time with the team to monitor the performance of the players. So he'd probably know who should make the cut and who shouldn't, but from the looks of it, his opinion on the issue is not taken. So what would the real purpose of a coach be? Maybe we should probably let the Indian team walk around with just a manager and no coach for a while and see how things turn out. Maybe that is just what THE BOYS need. Anyways, wanna know what the life of a cricketer is like? Its simple. Get yourself on the squad, work real hard on the first three matches, get yourself in the lime light, sign about five endorsement contracts, and you're all set to live for the next few years, NO SWEAT. Now how hard can that be? On another front, we have our national game, HOCKEY. RING A BELL somewhere? Why not try and invest some resources in hockey? Indian Cricket is a monumental disaster and trying to set it right now is, in the words of a famous man, like, "Throwing two ends of the same rope to DROWNING MAN!" With the right promotions, the right media drive, some hockey league activity at the domestic level, the lost popularity of the game can be revived and who knows, maybe it could bring about the revival of hockey fever. The brits seems to have got it all right. They have a pretty neat cricket team and to compliment all the cricketing, there is more than enough football happening. Consistency is something our sportsman know nothing about. Be it cricket, tennis or even hockey for that matter, we can’t really say we have had at least marginal success this year for any game. If this issue gets taken up in parliament, there will be another committee setup to PROBE the issue, a 500 page REPORT will be submitted and steps to handle the situation will be taken when the grand children of the current generation of players try their hand at the game.
