Anand Victorious at Linares.
By Vijay Kumar

Linares,Spain, 10th March 2007. The Former World Chess Champion India’s Viswanathan Anand played some excellent games at the Morelia-Linares Super GM’s Tournament to emerged victorious with 8.5 points from 14 games. In his last encounter against Vessily Ivanchuck, Anand ,despite having made some minor mistakes giving slight advantage to his opponent , never looked back and foiled all the attempts of his opponent and agreed for a draw on the 31st move.

Winning this tournament must be very important to Indian Grandmaster, who in 2005 and 2006 was somewhat overshadowed by Topalov and Vladimir Kramnik. After this tournament Vishy Anand, most probably will overtake Topalov as world's No 1 – and getting close to the 2800 barrier.

Carlsen had a chance to catch up with Anand, but lost the game to Leko. Despite losing in the last round, Magnus Carlsen was happy with his performance. It is hard to find a tournament where Leko or Topalov finished in last place.
Final Standings:
1. Anand (India, 2779) – 8½/14
2-3. Morozevich (Russia, 2741) and
Carlsen (Norway, 2690) - 7½
4-5. Aronian (Armenia, 2744) and
Svidler (Russia, 2728) – 7
6. Ivanchuk (Ukraine, 2750) - 6½
7-8. Topalov (Bulgaria, 2783) and
Leko (Hungary, 2749) – 6.
