Nanavati Hospital Launches Advanced Centre for Radiation Oncology
Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai recently launched its state of the art Advanced Centre for Radiation Oncology (ACRO). Dedicated to serving society with the help of latest technological up-gradations in the field of cancer research and treatment, the ACRO is part of the continuous development of Nanavati’s 27 years of radiotherapy.
The aim behind launching the ACRO was to set up a cancer center within Nanavati Hospital so that all branches of Oncology are made available under one roof. The ACRO strives to keep up with the technological changes in the world of Oncology.
Mumbai’s First Elekta Precise Digital Linear Accelerator Inaugurated
This is the only oncology centre in Mumbai to have the latest Elekta Precise Digital Linear Accelerator with Intensity Modulated Radiation and Image Guidance. This is an advanced system with two energy photons and multiple electrons. The Elekta machine helps in administration of Intensity Modulated Radio Therapy (IMRT) with image guidance and in vivo dosimeter. The system is connected to CT, MRI CAT scans for online image acquisition. This technology enables radiation oncologists to optimize and individualize the treatment.
Informs Dr. Nagraj Huilgol, Chief Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, “The special feature of this system is that the beams can be highly focused and redistributed within the tumor area in such a way that the most resistant part of the tumor can be attacked with the radiation.”
A common fear among patients of tumors is if the radiation will affect the surrounding organs near the tumor. The Elekta system is such that radiation can be concentrated within one centimeter area so that sensitive tissues and organs near to the tumor are not affected by the radiations as far as possible making it a safer option than conventional radiation therapy.
