Traffic arrangements for Ganesh Utsav Festival in Mumbai

During the ensuing Ganpati Festivals, the Traffic Police have to make elaborate arrangements to maintain law and order and to regulate traffic, both vehicular as well as pedestrian. Field Control Rooms are set up at 5 places viz. Girgaon Chowpatty, Shivaji Park Chowpatty, Bandra, Juhu Chowpatty and Powai (Ganesh Ghat). Watch Towers are erected at 33 places through out the city to regulate the Traffic as well as processions carrying the idols of Lord Ganesh.

Various voluntary organizations such as Civil Defence, Home Guards, Traffic Wardens, R.S.P.Teacher, Water Safety Patrol , N.C.C. Cadets, N.S.S. Students from various Colleges are

coordinating with Traffic Police in controlling the Pedestrian / vehicular Traffic as well as Ganpati processions.

Certain traffic restrictions have been imposed in Mumbai on Wednesday 19th Sept , Thursday 20th Sept, Friday 21st Sept, and on Tuesday 25th Sept., 2007 from 12.00 hrs. till 06.00 hrs. The restrictions, which are identical on days, will be as under :-

(1) CLOSURE OF VEHICLE TRAFFIC 24
(2) ONE WAY VEHICULAR MOVEMENT 46
(3) BAN ON TRUCK MOVEMENT 10
(4) PARKING RESTRICTONS 33

In addition to this, the following arrangement will also be made. Cranes would be stationed at various places to pull out any vehicle, which gets bogged down in the sand on the beaches or any idol-carrying vehicle, which fails on the roads. All the Police cranes, B.M.C. cranes and high capacity cranes from private organizations would be used. Steel Plates will also be provided on the beaches to prevent trucks and other vehicles from getting bogged down in the sand on various beaches. Drums will be placed on various roads to segregate the processions and the returning crowd. First Aid Center will be set up with the assistance of the St.John’s Ambulance Brigade , Saifee Ambulance , Muslim Ambulance & Parsi Ambulance Brigade.

All the above arrangements are made in the interest of the safety and convenience of the citizens. Volunteers including NGO members in very large number would be assisting the Police.
