"Ohana" is a Hawaiian word for an extended network of family and friends. Maitreya is the future Buddha who manifests as the Friend. I.C.T member Algienne Amrita launched the fund on November 22, 2008 on her farm in Hawaii in loving memory of her friend Barbara Jarvis.
The Ohana Maitreya Fund is a capital campaign with the mandate to construct shedras for Buddhist nuns in India. Shedras are schools for the traditional course of study for Tibetan Buddhist monastics. Literacy in the Tibetan language is a crucial aspect of the survival of Tibetan Buddhist culture.
The Om Fund made its first grant in May of 2009. $36,000 was given to Tilokpur Nunnery in Himachal Pradesh, India towards the completion of the new shedra at Drubten Pemo Jalpay Gatsal.
The OM Fund's Board of Advisors consists of Algienne Amrita, John Ackerly, and Lucy Jarvis.
