United Students delegation meets chief minister; demands university police.
A three-member delegation of United Students comprising of youth activist Aditya Raj Kaul, Ritwik Agrwal of Hindu College and Ekta Marwaha of Hansraj College met the Chief Minister of Delhi on Wednesday evening to discuss the recent DU Molestation Case and to submit a memorandum by the students of the Delhi University pertaining to strengthening campus security.
The prime demands include:
1) Increase in Security of Delhi University Campus. Introduction of University Police force, which may include people from NCC and NSS.
2) Making Delhi University a Compact Campus with gates installed on each entry and exit points.
3) Proper RFID Identification Cards should be issued to everyone who enters the campus including students, faculty, karmcharis, transporters, visitors etc.
4) Proper lighting in and around the campus and making a statutory body of teachers and students to deal with cases of sexual harassment.
Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit agreed with most of our points and termed the state of Delhi Police as "awe full".
In the one hour-long meeting, Madam Shiela Dikshit directed the Power Secretary Rakesh Mehta to take stock of street lighting all over the campus and if necessary introduction of CCTV Camera's on important locations.
She as well directed the Police Commissioner to designate an IAS level officer to take charge of entire Delhi University beat security. Along with this a few hundred women constables will also be on patrol in the campus for security from hence on.
The chief Minister further directed the Chief Secretary and the Vice-Chancellor to have a meeting soon to take stock of the measures introduced and decides over the future course of action.
The fact remains that such cases continue to recur in DU with frightening regularity. But the administration still doesn't wake up from its slumber and it hasn't developed any mechanism to tackle it.
United Students is a Delhi University based group, which initiated the Jessica Lall and Priyadarshini Mattoo Campigns and also let the anti-reservation campaign.
