Kalam Calls For Development Of Reusable Space Transportation System For India

President A P J Abdul Kalam on Friday called on international experts to develop a single-stage-to-orbit fully reusable, safe, affordable aerobic space transportation system. Kalam said scientists from partnering nations should use each other's competence for designing a system capable of launching multi-purpose mission including new orbiting space stations, space habitat and Space Solar Power Station.

"It can bring down the cost of access to space to 2,000 dollars per kilogram from the existing 20,000 dollars per kilogram," Kalam said.

Kalam was addressing the inauguration of the international conference on "High Speed Trans-atmospheric Air and Space Transportation" here.

Earlier today, Kalam administered a 'seven-point oath' to students of Vivek Vardhini Education Society while inaugurating the centenary celebrations of the institution.

During his day-long visit, Kalam inaugurated the state-of-the-art Cardiac stent manufacturing facility of the Relisys Medical Devices at Ibrahimpatnam on the city's outskirts.

He also visited the Digital Radiology Centre at Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), which is working towards providing low cost digital radiography equipment, electronic medical records systems with tele-radiology facility in partnership with Madhu Reddy of US Electronics.

Before leaving for Delhi, Kalam addressed the students and staff of the Army College of Dental Sciences in Secunderabad.

Kalam said a special diploma course should be introduced for imparting maintenance training on dental equipment. "This will have tremendous employment potential," he said.

He further called upon the students and faculty members of the college to be catalysts of self-reliance for promotion of indigenous technology and traditional health care system.
