Reservations              -Voice of India

By EDITOR, WD

Some Indian ministers have definitely lost the track of time. They are worried about a small Indian populace, consisting of ‘Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes’ (SC/ST). They are worried that they are not treated on par with the so called higher castes. They feel they are receiving no education and thus are deprived of a means of a livelihood. Agreed that several states in India treat them like dirt, yet a system of reservation in educational institutions and jobs is uncalled for.

Can you imagine the kind of a doctor, one will visit in future who has passed through medical college only on the basis of filling up a seat under SC/ST and not on intelligence? Can you imagine giving your company’s sensitive data to someone who has no inclination to handle them, because he merely passed through the course on the basis of an easy to get seat under reservation?

The root case of all these problems is not a government wanting to uplift the lower castes and the resistance of others. The huge problem is overlooked in a complete illogical manner by the government themselves, through their age old policies of issuing an outdated template of forms to be filled. They need to seriously look into updating these templates and follow the World Wide Web version, where none of the forms are discriminated globally. The very simple questions like asking a person’s caste, religion, father’s or husband’s name, etc., is completely against the global charter of politically correct questions to be asked. What has a caste or a religion got to do with securing admission to an educational institution? Is not what the institution seeks is an admission of a human being or an Indian Citizen enough? If at all, check the marks of the candidate, not the background or genealogy of that soul.

What does a child understand about parentage? Would it make an iota of a difference if the child has both parent or a single parent? As long as someone is responsible for the child and the finances, what difference does it make to the child’s intelligence? Why this blatant discrimination and to make amends displease millions of other Indians? This is sheer ignorance on path of the government who requires better educational qualification to run the country.

Have any Indian given it a thought to starting community colleges and additional educational institutions for the SC/ST? Instead of marking reservations, why not add on educational institutions, since the severe lack of these are creating more problems than solving them. Create additional good institutions that a backward student may not be guilty of attending but take pride in the fact that they are getting a globalized education. Call them community colleges or rural educational institutions or whatever, but they should also provide the best in teaching facility on par with other educational institutions so they do not feel ‘left out’. Think more, don’t cut!
