WORLD KIDNEY DAY

March 9 is celebrated as the ‘World Kidney Day’. The focus on prevention of kidney ailments was the aim of this day in Mumbai by National Kidney Foundation, Mumbai Nephrology group and Narmada Kidney Foundation.

Eminent speakers such as Dr. Vidya N. Acharya, spoke on ‘know your kidneys’; Dr. B.V. Gandhi, spoke on ‘common kidney problems’; followed by an enlightening talk by Dr. Ajay Singh, professor, Harvard Medical School and another talk by Dr. Ashok Kirpalani. On this occasion a book was also launched called, ‘Dialysis’, by the chief guest Shri. V.P. Singh, former Indian prime minister, along with, Mr. Shammi Kapoor, actor. The book was written by Dr. Prabha Apte and coordinated by Dr. Acharya.

Mr. Shammi Kapoor talked about his experience being a kidney patient briefly that was humorous and motivating. Mr. Singh highlighted medical problems a kidney patient faces and raised queries about solving them. Other prominent kidney patient spoke about the expenses incurred and the prohibitive cost of medical and dialysis equipment. All in all they tried to draw attention on two major factors. 1. Early detection and prevention. 2. What the government should do to help future kidney patience that are on rise. A skit was presented by a young lad who had contracted kidney disease and came out with loads of courage. The whole function was presided by Mr. Nana Chudasama and Col. Satnam Singh.
