Entrepreneurship Journey..an Experience to remember
by Prakash Mundhra
Writing a 2 line email never takes more than a minute but it took me more than 2 hours to write a mail that send shivers down the spine of 200 people… The day was May 7 and the mail was to announce my decision to start my own venture instead of joining the company I had got placement at SCMHRD (Symbiosis Centre for Management and Human Resource Development).
Today when I look back, I can only be proud of my decision. My company ‘Sacred Moments’ manufactured ‘ Blessingz’ Diwali Puja Kit which was appreciated not only by my clients but also from the likes of Hon. Vice President Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhavat, Mr. Ashok Hinduja, Smt. Rajashree Birla etc. The concept of designer Puja Kit gave corporate clients a novelty gift yet an ethnic one. It was far away from the cliché Dry Fruits or Mithai as well as different from a gift picked up from the flooded Chinese gifts available. The kit has 32 items essential for the Diwali Puja, packed and labeled in a way people could not have imagined. It also had a booklet describing the puja process.
In business, Customer is not the king, he is ‘Brahma’ as it is he who creates your business. If you do not maintain him acting as ‘Vishnu’, it would not be long when he would turn into ‘Shiva’ and destroy your business. I remember delivering a kit at midnight at airport to a prospective client and also carton of kits to stores on my bike similarly to a Domino Pizza delivery.
Many a times I have introspected on ‘Does an MBA degree help to become an Entrepreneur’?. The answer I have always got is the trademark MBA guy answer.. ‘ It depends’. In my case, business plan competition played a very important role in shaping my idea and winning 10 of them gave me enough competition to pursue my dream. But I still feel, Entrepreneurship could be inculcated in a better way than it is being taught in B school today.
I would like to end on a humour note but still an inspirational one. A girl visits a gift store on Valentine’s Day and asks for ‘ My One and only One Love’ Card. The store Keeper somehow manages to search one only to be asked by the girl ‘ Give me 12 such cards’. I believe many a times, we want to show the world that ‘ Entrepreneurship is my one and only one dream’ but on the back of our mind we have several other dreams too hovering around. So if owning a Mercedez is as important to you as becoming an Entrepreneur, you would be better in a corporate job. For an Entrepreneur, the only dream could be business..business and business…
